Mail Call

May 17, 2010

"This is a comment for the lady talking about the car show out at the old County Market, about the noise and the air pollution. There is no noise - they don't allow it. And air pollution - they're all these old vehicles in a lot better shape than the newer ones. And it's also, both the one at the mall in Hagerstown, are both fundraisers for kids' charities. So please go out and watch one day."

"Thanks to Arizona's new law, my family's going to take a vacation to Arizona this year. And if a cop would like to stop me to ask me for ID, I will show him my driver's license and thank him for stopping me."

"This is to the Clear Spring caller who said he was on Nestle Quarry Road trying to find the couch and tires that were left behind. You wanted to know why you couldn't find it, the items. It was because shortly after I called Mail Call, someone did come up and pick up the couch, the tires and the rest of debris. But I'd like to say thank you very much for making an effort to help clean up my road. I greatly appreciate it."

"National Taxpayers Union gave Maryland's two senators, Barbara Mikulski and Ben Cardin, a 5 percent rating, for an F grade. Roscoe Bartlett received an 86 percent rating, for a B+ grade, which is the highest in the state of Maryland. National debt, at a level of 60 percent of gross domestic production, is considered to be the upper limits of sustainability. U.S. national debt will reach 60 percent by the end of the year, and under the Obama administration ... the national debt consumes 14 percent of the total federal budget. Please keep these facts in mind at the next election."

"Glad to see The Herald-Mail on A7, the 13th, reported that the stamp honoring Katharine Hepburn is going to be done by the federal governent. Seems sad, Audie Murphy, the most highly decorated soldier, can't even get it, but Bart Simpson and all these Hollywood stars can. And also, the Kagan nomination: We're going to wind up having no Protestants on the Supreme Court. Something's wrong with this picture."

"How badly do the edges need to crumble away on Barnhart and Hicksville roads in Clear Spring before the county will fix them correctly? Turning onto either of these roads from St. Paul's, about a mile each way, is extremely treacherous and dangerous if meeting an oncoming driver that may pop over the hill. There is not enough room for a bus and car to pass without driving into potholes, but the fact that the edges of the road are actually crumbling away makes it that much worse."

"In (Tim Rowland's) column, busting on Baltimore - there is a lot to do in Baltimore and the Inner Harbor. You can catch an Orioles game, you can go to the Inner Harbor, great restaurants, plenty of shopping, and it is - if you don't have the money to go on a nice vacation, you can definitely spend a day or two in Baltimore and there's a lot of nice things to do down there. ... I find Tim to be a funny columnist, but today's, it was just totally ludicrous."

"I see the Montreal hockey team has defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins. The reason they won is not for being a great team, but because their goalie who is the size of an elephant takes up the whole net."

"This is in response to the person from Hagerstown who called on Thursday, May 13, and left a response that when George W. Bush was president we didn't have any terrorist attacks like we're having today. You seem to forget the worst terrorist attack in history, 9/11. Remember that, the Twin Towers? That was under his rule. Don't forget that. That was the worst one in the United States' history."

"I'm just calling to say how glad I am that Washington County Health System has changed its mind and decided to reopen the Learning Center on Summit Avenue instead of closing it. I was so very unhappy when they announced the closing because I feel as though those girls all needed a job and I'm so happy they're keeping their jobs, and I'm so happy the Learning Center will continue on. Thank you, Washington County Health System. That decision was one of the best ones you could have made."

"Question one: Are dinosaurs extinct? Question two: Is the dodo bird alive and well and living in Australia? Question three - and it's rhetorical - is common sense - where is it? Is it gone the way of the dinosaur?"

- Hagerstown

"I'm calling about the caller from Hagerstown, said when George W. Bush was president we didn't have any terrorist attacks. He's forgetting about the anthrax mailings and the shoe bomber on the airplane. No president can protect you a hundred percent of the time. It's going to keep doing this no matter who is president. Also, secondly, the caller from Williamsport who said he'd like to drill, baby, drill, keep the oil and the money here, the oil or the money stays here. The money goes to ... BP is British Petroleum."
