SMITHSBURG -- Brunswick pitcher Tyler Itnyre was too much for the Smithsburg baseball team in more ways than one.

Itnyre had four hits, including two of Brunswick's four home runs, while collecting nine strikeouts to lead the Railroaders to a 10-9 win over the Leopards on Friday in the first round of the Maryland 1A West playoffs.

Smithsburg (10-9) led 9-7 until Brunswick batted in the top of the sixth inning. Itnyre led off with his second solo home run. Eric Omdahl and Zach Dinges followed with walks before Brett Stramin reached on a force play. Dylan Brown tied the game with a double to center.

Spencer Cooper reached on an infield single to load the bases to set up Zack Struss bringing home the winning run by drawing a walk. Struss, who batted ninth, drew walks in all four of his plate appearances.

Smithsburg threatened in the bottom of the seventh but came up empty. Jack Schwartz hit a one-out double to left. Aaron Schroyer tried to end the game by hitting a two-out drive to right-center. Brunswick center fielder Michael Hooper made a leaping grab over the fence to seal the win for the Railroaders.

"It was kind of indicative of the way that this game went," Brunswick coach Roger Dawson said. "It was going to take a big play to win it. Surprisingly, it was the defensive play that won it there."

Smithsburg coach Trey Cobb agreed.

"On the last play of the game, that center fielder reached over the fence to catch that ball," Cobb said. "If he misses the ball, it goes over the fence for a two-run homer and we win the game."

Smithsburg came back from a 6-0 deficit to take the 9-7 lead.

Smithsburg got four runs in the third on two-run homers by Jake Gouff and Schwartz.

Smithsburg added four runs in the fourth on a two-run throwing error and a two-run double by Aaron Dinterman.

Smithsburg added a run in the fifth on Schroyer's solo homer.

Brunswick started off with five runs in the first inning on a two-run homer by Hooper, a solo homer by Itnyre and a two-run homer by Dinges.
