STEVENSVILLE, Md. - Colleen B. Stewart Higdon, of Stevensville, Md., died Thursday, May 6, 2010, at Hospice Center of Queen Anne's in Centreville, Md. She was 79 years old.

Born Dec. 22, 1930, in Gormania, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Charles O. Bosley and Ethel M. Taylor.

She grew up in Western Maryland and attended Fort Hill High School in Cumberland, Md. She married Howard E. Stewart and they resided in Hagerstown, where Colleen worked at Venice Inn & Restaurant, serving as a hostess, waitress and bartender for several years before moving to Kent Island.


She married Cal B. Higdon on Feb. 27, 1967. Colleen was an active volunteer with the ladies auxiliaries of both the American Legion Post 278 and the Kent Island Volunteer Fire Department. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, crocheting and ceramics.

Colleen is survived by two sons, Howard E. Stewart Jr. of Ellicott City, Md., and Gregory S. Stewart of Pawley's Island, S.C.; two daughters, Brenda C. Simmons of Staunton, Va., and Tracie Hash of Jacksonville, Fla.; a brother, Robert Bosley of Cumberland, Md.; four sisters, Anna Martin of Hagerstown, Md., Nancy Moreland of Cumberland, Md., Anita Jetter of Milford, Ohio, and Charlene Whiteman of Wiley Ford, W.Va.; 11 grandchildren, Tammi Patterson, Jeff Stewart, Nichole McPherson, Kelly Cash, Michael Stewart, Andy Simmons, Kyle Simmons, Matthew Stewart, Dusty Schulz, Mitchell Stewart and Cade Jones; five great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She is predeceased by a sister, Helen Peer.

A memorial service was held at the American Legion Post 278 on Kent Island on Wednesday, May 12, at 1 p.m.
