HANCOCK -- On Monday, Hancock had problems hitting and scoring runs as the Panthers were swept by Southern Fulton in a doublehader to close out the regular season.

Nothing changed on Thursday when the Panthers hosted Brunswick and were blanked by the Railroaders 10-0 in five innings in a Maryland Class 1A West first-round playoff game.

Hancock (9-10) managed only two hits on the day against Brunswick (7-12).

"We put the bat on the ball today," said Hancock coach Rocky Wills, "but not many went through."

Becky Kaler pitched a shutout for Brunswick, striking out five. Kaler was also the Railroaders' top hitter, going 3-for-3 with two RBIs.

"This is her fourth year on varsity," Brunswick coach Shannon Hogeback said. "She's very talented and can place the ball anywhere she wants."

Brunswick took a 1-0 lead in the first on Brandy Stone's sacrifice fly. The Railroaders added four more runs in the second on an RBI triple by Anita Heath, Laura Wenner's RBI single and Kaler's two-run knock.

The third inning was more of the same for Brunswick. Two runners crossed the plate on a Hancock error and a third scored on Wenner's sacrifice fly.

Two more Brunswick runs scored on wild pitches.

Tiffany Younker pitched five innings for the Panthers, allowing nine hits and eight earned runs. Two Hancock errors didn't help.

"The defense slacked a little today," Wills said.
