BOONSBORO -- Boonsboro senior Megan Long was solid in the circle as the Warriors defeated Northern Garrett 3-2 in the first round of the Maryland Class 1A West softball playoffs on Thursday.

Boonsboro (10-9) will travel to face Mountain Ridge on Monday in the 1A West quarterfinals.

"We scrimmaged with Mountain Ridge this year. They're a pretty good team," Warriors coach Lisa Lewis said. "We're going to have to work on our hitting in practice this week."

Long (7-6) struck out four and walked two while scattering two runs and five hits in a complete-game effort.

The Huskies (6-13) came out swinging in the first inning against Long (7-6). Leadoff batter Kaitlyn Fratz slapped the first pitch into center for a single. Kiersten Butler followed with another single and Miranda Beasom brought Fratz home on a sacrifice fly for a 1-0 lead.

Long got out of the jam without further damage, then settled in nicely in the second, striking out the side in quick fashion. Northern Garrett would not score again until the fifth, when a throwing error allowed Kirsten Rayner to trot home.

Huskies pitcher Taryn Brenneman (5-12) also pitched a complete game, striking out two and walking four while giving up three runs.

Four of the Warriors' six hits came from the bottom of the order. In the second, No. 7-hitter Tristan Hartle stretched what looked like a triple to right field into an inside-the-park home run.

"I just swung the bat and started running. I knew it was a triple, but I was waved home," said Hartle, "I'm kind of disappointed that the ball didn't go over the fence."

Hartle ended the night 2-for-3 with a single in the sixth.

Back-to-back doubles by Alison Holmes and Amber Myers brought in another run to make it 2-1 in the second.

Haley Payne tacked on Boonsboro's third run in the third inning on a Brenneman wild pitch.

"My girls battled back, and knowing that they can battle back boosted their confidence," said Lewis. "They played a good game backing up Megan."
