Martinsburg City Council adopts ordinance to increase fire fees

May 14, 2010|By MATTHEW UMSTEAD

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. --The Martinsburg City Council on Thursday adopted an ordinance to increase the fire fee it charges property owners.

The ordinance, which will go into effect July 1, will increase the fire fee for each residential property owner by $30, to $90 per year.

Commercial property owners will see an increase of 2 cents per square foot to 7.5 cents per square foot. The fee increase is expected to generate about $290,000, which is needed to close a $500,000 gap in the city's budget, officials have said.

The last fire fee increase occurred in 2002, officials have said.

In addition to the fire fee increase, the city council last month approved an increase in the levy rate used to calculate property taxes.

Owners of a $200,000 residential property will pay $16.56 more per year in property taxes and a business property with the same market value will pay $33.12 more in taxes with the levy rate increase. The new levy rates are 8.61 cents (Class I), 17.22 cents (Class II) and 34.44 cents (Class III and IV) per $100 of assessed value.
