Board to rule on Zullinger woman's request on day care

ZULLINGER, Pa. - The Washington Township Zoning Hearing Board will meet May 24 to hear testimony and decide on a Zullinger woman's request to have a day care center in her town house.

Jennifer Albright, who lives on Zana Court, wrote the Washington Township Supervisors on March 17 saying she wants to open a day care but was told it was not permitted in R-2, medium density residential zones.

Township Manager Mike Christopher said Albright initially asked that day care be added as a permitted use in R-2.

Her case before the quasi-judicial hearing board this month is an appeal of the township's May 4 denial of variance for conditional use for day care based on it not being permitted in the R-2 zone.

Albright submitted a request for conditional use under the section of the township code that states day care centers serve "the educational needs of the community," according to the application she filed on May 3.

Supervisors debated Wednesday making testimony on the board's behalf at the May 24 hearing, but because they did not unanimously agree on Albright's request, they chose to not testify.

If denied a variance, Albright can appeal the hearing board's decision to Franklin County Court, Christopher said.
