Farmers market opens June 5

WAYNESBORO, Pa. -- Wondering where to find the best local produce this summer? You might not have to look too far beyond your own backyard when the new Waynesboro Farmers Market is launched this spring.

The market will run Saturdays from June 5 to Sept. 25. It will be open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Rotary Parking Lot in downtown Waynesboro.

Main Street Waynesboro Inc. (MSW) and the Waynesboro Fire Department are organizing the new market, which will provide a venue for farmers and other vendors to bring fresh, locally produced foods to area residents.

"We hope the farmers market will be a central location for shopping and socializing," said Melissa Russ, director of promotions and member services for MSW.

In addition to a variety of seasonal produce, the market will offer other items such as herbs, meats, dairy products, baked goods, honey, jams and jellies, cider, syrups, bedding plants and flowers.

In conjunction with the farmers market, Main Street merchants will introduce "Strolling Saturdays" on the first Saturday of each month.

"Strolling Saturdays will feature live music, activities for kids, special sales, art exhibits and more," Russ said.

Occasional workshops and demonstrations by area chefs are planned.

Farmers and other producers are invited to participate in the market. The market's handbook can be found online at or can be mailed upon request.

Russ also is looking for volunteers to help Sandi Gardner, the farmers market committee chairwoman, with the market.

For more information on volunteering or becoming a vendor, send an e-mail to">; or call Gardner at 717-765-4741 or Russ at 717-762-0397.
