Mail Call

May 12, 2010

"I just read in your newspaper today where oil is down $10 this week, and I'd like to know what the gas (stations) plan on doing. Are they going to lower the gas, or are they going to wait until the oil goes up a dollar and then raise the gas to $3?"

- Maugansville

"I experienced an issue with a local store, and it's been an ongoing issue, and I ended up having to make a formal complaint. I'd just like to remind everybody out there, show a little common courtesy and a little respect to people and they won't have to go to another store because of a store employee making a comment or being inconsiderate, that it's not their life, their health, their problem."

- Clear Spring

"The article Friday, May 7, from Hagerstown, said they don't understand that every time something went wrong, like Katrina, they blamed Bush, but they don't blame Obama. Well, I'm blaming Obama. When Haiti was destroyed it was horrible, and I believe in helping anybody, I don't care who you are, but I think we need to help the American people for a change. ... See Michelle Obama on TV asking for $10 for Katrina and that area? No. I think it's about time we help the American people."

"I'm just catching up on the paper here, and I see here where somebody called in and complained about a woman had two kids who she was raising, and worked, and made more money than the person who had to pay her. Well, it's too bad. If those are his kids, then he needs to pay for them, too. She shouldn't have to carry the whole burden, no matter how much she makes."

- Falling Waters, W.Va.

"If you have your mind on your driving, watching where you're going, how can you have a head-on collision like some of these people do, unless you are distracted by somebody in the vehicle, text messaging, talking on the cell, concentrating on what you're saying on the cell, instead of watching where you're going? Can you tell me an answer to that, people?"

- Hancock

"I'd like to respond to Mail Call in Sunday's paper. ... This is on the oil thing. You know, you drill oil, things are going to happen. What are you going to do when these people who are drilling for gas and a gas line blows up? You going to shut down the gas? What are you going to do when a windmill falls down and kills somebody or falls across the street or something in a road and kills somebody? You going to shut the windmill power down?"

- Hagerstown

"Now don't you people go there, saying that Obama didn't react to the spill fast enough. Whoa, step back a moment. BP said for a week they had it under control. ... So don't go blaming Obama for not reacting fast enough."

- Hagerstown

"Church and state separate. People live together at will without marriage. It's a choice made every day, so I guess it's not a law. I believe the church should be able to marry at will. The government shouldn't have anything in it, because they said church and state is separate."

- Warfordsburg, Pa.

"This is in responding to the call in the paper on Monday that someone answered to the tailgating driver. I was the one that was being tailgated, and yes, I was paying attention to the road in front of me. That's why I pulled over and let this person pass me. If you've ever been hit in the rear end, you have years of problems with your neck and your spinal cord. I wasn't aware that there was a bill in the state Senate for cell phones. It can't be signed and used too quickly."

- Hagerstown

"Our utilities, house, car insurance, credit card companies doubled our percentage on the balance. Doctor raised his office's charge. We've asked for help, cannot get it because our two Social Security checks, too much gross income, but not net. After all deductions, it's way below poverty level. Have cut everything we could. Why go by gross income? Why not net?"

- Hagerstown

"There are vacant lots in the town of Funkstown where no one is mowing the grass. If you have to live next to these lots, it's not very nice. So I really think that somebody should make these people mow their grass."

- Funkstown

"In Sunday's paper, Dr. Saylor wrote an excellent article about the dam at Devil's Backbone. Thank goodness someone who is not politically motivated, but has common sense and good knowledge of the environment, has finally spoken up. I've tried to do this, my father has, and some of our friends that do know something about the rivers and whatnot, but nobody's been paying attention to us. Thank you, Doctor, for writing that letter. Maybe someone will listen to you."

- Hagerstown

"They talk about building a new library. When's that going to happen? When are they going to get about making plans to start building the new library? That's what I'd like to know."

- Hagerstown
