WILLIAMSPORT, Md. - Victor Joseph "Vic" Vitkun, 91, of Williamsport, Md., and formerly of St. James, N.Y., died Tuesday, May 11, 2010, at his home.

Born Jan. 5, 1919, in St. James, N.Y., to the late Edward and Stephania Vebrlis Vitkun.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Eleanor Ann Dulis Vitkun, in 1976.

He was a graduate of Smithtown High School, Smithtown, N.Y., and attended Farmingdale Community College, Farmingdale, N.Y.

He was employed as a supervisor with Brookhaven National Laboratory in Long Island, N.Y., until retiring in 1984. He also owned and operated a landscaping business, VJV Nursery & Stock, in Long Island.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving as a first lieutenant during World War II in the Pacific Theater. He received the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star.

He was a member of St. Phillip & James Roman Catholic Church in St. James.

He was a member of the VFW of Smithtown.

Survivors include daughter, Patricia A. Ieraci of Hagerstown, Md.; sons, Cordell J. Vitkun of Shady Side, Md., Ronald J. Vitkun of Williamsport, Kenneth W. Vitkun of St. James and Jeffery J. Vitkun of West Babylon, N.Y.; grandchildren, Jeffrey Vitkun, AmyMarie Gaffney, Christopher Vitkun, Brett Vitkun, Zachary Ieraci and AmandaRose Vitkun.

He was predeceased by one sister, Wanda Romansky; and one brother, Edward Vitkun.

The family will receive friends at Osborne Funeral Home, 425 S. Conococheague St., Williamsport, on Thursday, May 13, 2010, from 7 to 9 p.m. The funeral home will be open after 9 a.m. Thursday for the convenience of family and friends. Prayers will be offered at 6:45 p.m. by Monsignor Alfred E. Smith.

Funeral services will be at the funeral home on Friday, May 14, 2010, at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Father Stephen Hook officiating. Interment will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Smithtown, on Monday, May 17, 2010, at 1 p.m., where military honors will be provided.

The family requests the omission of flowers.
