Softball playoff draws announced

Washington County's Class 1A softball teams will likely have to go on the road to win the 1A West championship and earn a berth in the state tournament.

MVAL Antietam champion Catoctin (16-2) earned the top seed in 1A West, with Allegany County schools Allegany and Mountain Ridge earning the next two seeds.

Smithsburg (14-4), which finished alone in second place in the MVAL Antietam, drew the fourth seed and will host No. 13-seed Southern Garrett in the first round Thursday at 5 p.m.

In other 1A West first-round games Thursday, Clear Spring (14-4) drew the fifth seed and will host No. 12-seed Fort Hill at 4:30; Boonsboro (9-9) drew the sixth seed and will host No. 11-seed Northern Garrett at 4:45; Hancock (9-9) is the seventh seed and will host No. 10-seed Brunswick at 4:30; and Williamsport (11-7) drew the ninth seed and will travel to eighth-seed Manchester Valley for a 4:30 game.

In Class 2A West, North Hagerstown (2-16) -- which had to forfeit 10 wins last week due to an ineligible player -- drew the No. 10 seed and will travel to seventh-seed South Carroll for a first-round matchup Thursday at 4:30.

In Class 3A West, South Hagerstown (1-17) also drew the No. 10 seed and will travel to face seventh-seed Kennedy in the first round Thursday at 4.

Region quarterfinal games are scheduled for May 17, with semifinals on May 19 and finals on May 21.

The MPSSAA will conduct the tournament draw for baseball today.
