MYERSVILLE, Md. - Leonard Craig Smith, 66, a resident of the Myersville area since 1945, died Sunday, May 9, 2010, at his home.

He was born Dec. 11, 1943, in Riverdale, Md., and was the son of the late Leonard M. and Marjorie E. House Smith.

Leonard was a 1961 graduate of Middletown High School and served in the U.S. Army. He was a surveyor and retired in 1999 as the head of the Optical Metalurgy Lab at National Bureau of Standards.


He always enjoyed being outdoors, no matter the season, liked flowers since his childhood and taught himself to carve. He carved birds and animals, liked to scroll saw intarsia, and to do some fret work and woodburning. He also built his own home.

Surviving Leonard are his wife, Roberta; three children, Richard Smith and his companion Robin Little of Marlowe, W.Va., Daniel Smith and his wife Judy of Fort Stockton, Texas, and C. Lane Smith Wood of New Freedom, Pa.; his sister, Carolyn Sue Smith of Sebring, Fla.; five grandchildren, Nicholas and Joseph Smith, and Zachariah, Zedikiah and Z. Riley Wood; and three step-grandchildren, Sean, Spencer and Scott and his wife Carrie.

Leonard's wishes were to have a memorial service followed by a picnic to celebrate his life, which will be held Sunday, June 6, 2010, at 2 p.m. at his residence, 1930 Monument Road, Myersville, conducted by Sterling Edwards. Casual attire is requested.

In lieu of flowers, Leonard's request was for memorial donations to be made to Hospice of Frederick County, 516 Trail Ave., P.O. Box 1799, Frederick, MD 21702.
