Mail Call

May 10, 2010

"Thank God the governor of Arizona for taking a stand against these illegal immigrants. It's about time that somebody stood up to the invasion. It doesn't look like Obama is going to do anything about it too soon, or the rest of Congress. So, I salute you, governor of Arizona, and I hope the rest of America stands up and makes a statement against this illegal invasion of our country."

"To the caller from Falling Waters, W.Va.: Indians were not in America first. Actually, Native Americans were in America first and Indians were in India."

- Smithsburg

"I drove down Nestle Quarry Road today to find the couch and to see how many tires I needed to haul away. It was the least I could do to get the taste of crow off my tongue. I couldn't find any tires, couch or trash. All I saw was well-maintained houses and what looked to be like a nice place to live. Did you and your neighbors get together or was I on the wrong road?"

"On May 5 on Maryland Avenue and Downsville Pike, I was cut off by a white Nissan. This kind of driving will only get you to kill someone that is very innocent. Your license number was turned into the state police."

- Hagerstown

"This is for the two women, one in a silver minivan and one in a red car on Wednesday, May 5, who blocked the entire northbound lanes of the intersection at Maugans Avenue because they were too impatient to wait for a red light. No one could go anywhere because traffic was backed up due to construction and because they were too impatient to stop for a red light."

"To the person who believes volcanoes are a primary cause of global warming. A far greater amount of CO2 is contributed to the atmosphere by human activities each year than by volcanic eruptions. T.M. Gerlach (1991, American Geophysical Union) notes that human-made CO2 exceeds the estimated global release of CO2 from volcanoes by at least 150 times. The small amount of global warming caused by eruption-generated greenhouse gases is offset by the far greater amount of global cooling caused by eruption-generated particles in the stratosphere (the haze effect). http://www.geology.sdsu.edu/how_volcanoes_work/climate_effects.html."

"Congratulations to Paul Crampton on becoming mayor of Funkstown."

"I just wanted to know what happened to 'American Idol?' I watched it on May 4 and they had 12 commercials at one time between one part of the program. It's all commercials and it had about 10 or 12 minutes of singing. They could have done it all in about a half-hour. I feel this is the worst 'American Idol' that they've ever had. There's no top person at all. I'm disgusted with 'American Idol.'"

- Hagerstown

"I'm saddened as I drive around town and see ragged, soiled American flags flying on staff at businesses and homes. Look up; is one of these flags yours? Replace it with a bright new one. Contact your local Scout troop or veterans organizations to respectfully dispose of it. Our flag represents the history of our nation and the sacrifices made in her name. Honor it."

- Hagerstown

"I'd like to know one thing and that is the people that are making this $250,000 that is in Mail Call all the time, who are these people that are making that kind of money? Please print it because all my life I've made $200 a week and I can't get it. I kept a family on that and it doesn't make sense that everybody is making $250,000 and I'd like to know who these people are."

- Hagerstown

"Vehicle owners, I just read in the newspaper today where oil is under $80 a barrel. Come on stations, get the prices down."

- Clear Spring

"I just wanted to say thank you to the individuals who stopped on Eastern Boulevard and assisted with the ducklings being able to cross."

- Hagerstown

"This is to the Hagerstown caller who complained about the tailgating driver using a cell phone. Your description of what occurred leads me to believe that you were not paying attention, either. The Maryland House of Delegates has already passed legislation banning the use of hand-held devices. It currently awaits Gov. O'Malley's signature. Even if he signs it tomorrow, it won't take effect until Oct. 1. In the meantime, pay attention to the road in front of you."

- Cavetown

"So, Sarah Palin how's that 'Drill Baby Drill' thingy working for ya now?"

- Washington County

"What is happening to youth sports? It is no longer fun for kids to play a game of baseball or football or even soccer nowadays because there is too much stress from the stands to not have fun and (to) enjoy your youth, you must win and dominate the other team at whatever cost. Do you parents not pay attention to the way the kids act after games are over? They forget it and go play with their friends, even those from the other team. Come out and cheer on good games from both teams and enjoy a day outside watching children play and learning."
