South High Alumni Association awards scholarships

The South Hagerstown High School Alumni Association has announced the winners of its 2010 alumni scholarships.

This year's recipients were each awarded $1,000 scholarships honoring their outstanding scholastic achievements and participation in numerous school and community activities:

Kara Marie Henson

Kara plans to attend Towson University, where she will study nursing. Kara's academic program has included honors, advanced-placement and HCC courses. She has a strong grade-point average and is a member of the National Honor Society. Kara has been a student mentor, provided support for special-education students and is a member of the Environmental Club. She has been active in her class, serving as secretary, and is a member of the Rebel tennis and volleyball teams. Kara's future plans include a master's degree and to become a certified registered nurse anesthetist.

Ryan David

Ryan plans a career in architecture and will attend Penn State University. He has consistently maintained a strong grade-point average while taking honors and advanced-placement courses. He is a member of the National Honor Society. Ryan has served as class president all four years at South High.


In addition to playing three varsity sports - soccer, lacrosse and track - he also helps students transition into high school and has assisted in the guidance office.

Ryan is an Eagle Scout and leads youth services for his church.
