WASHINGTON COUNTY -- The state fire marshal's office will try to determine the cause of a Saturday night fire that caused extensive damage to a two-story wood-frame house at 13180 Independence Road, a spokesman for the Clear Spring Volunteer Fire Department said Sunday.

When firefighters arrived at the scene of the Clear Spring-area blaze, heavy fire was spreading across the back of the house, the spokesman said.

The spokesman said he did not know who lived in the home.

The fire, which was reported about 8:30 p.m., was battled by fire crews from Clear Spring, Williamsport, Maugansville, Halfway and Franklin County, Pa.

Tony Pirrone of the Washington County chapter of the American Red Cross said the family displaced by the fire was placed in a hotel for three nights.
