Truck tractors burn at DOT Foods

May 08, 2010|By ANDREW SCHOTZ

WILLIAMSPORT -- A fire destroyed three truck tractors and damaged a fourth at DOT Foods on Saturday, but six others were saved, a fire department official said.

Kevin Lewis, a volunteer with the Williamsport Volunteer Fire & EMS Company, said it appears that a mechanical failure in one truck tractor started the fire.

Because of high winds, the fire spread from one truck tractor to the next, he said.

People scrambled to move six other truck tractors before they burned.

DOT Foods, a food distributor, has a warehouse at 16301 Elliott Parkway near Williamsport.

The fire was reported about 2:20 p.m.

Firefighters from Halfway and Funkstown assisted, as did the county's special operations unit, Lewis said.

A state fire marshal was investigating.
