Happy Mother's Day



Whatever your plans are this weekend, be sure to let your wife, mom, sister or auntie know how much you love them.

And to my mom, aunties, sister and friends who are moms or "like" moms, I am wishing you a happy Mother's Day that is blessed beyond measure. Much love to you all.

Still champion



Youth wrestler Aaron Brooks won the Mid-Atlantic Wrestling Association's Eastern National Championship on April 30 by pinning everyone in the first period on his way to the finals, which he won by a score of 7-0.

Aaron did not give up any points in any of his matches.

Aaron and his brother, Isaiah Brooks, will be competing at Boiling Springs (Pa.) High School in the Pennsylvania Slam on May 22 for Team Maryland and in the National High School Coaches Association National Dual Championships for Team Maryland in Virginia Beach, Va., over the Memorial Day weekend.

Gospel Extravaganza



A Gospel Extravaganza will be held at Asbury United Methodist Church in Hagerstown Sunday, May 23, at 4 p.m. A free-will offering will be accepted.

Book swap



Zion Baptist Church, at 61 W. Bethel St., will hold a book swap Saturday from noon to 4 p.m.

Spiritual resources, including books, CDs, DVDs and tapes will been available for resale and swapping.

Popcorn and punch will be served.

Women's Day tea



On Saturday, May 15, Second Christian Church, 65 W. North Ave., will hold its annual Women's Day Tea from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Chose from two menus: menu one will include fried chicken, potato salad and green beans; menu two will be served with turkey salad, green beans, chips, pickles and deviled eggs. Both meals include roll, cake and soda. The meal costs $8.

Joy Night



On Saturday, May 15, at 6 p.m., Zion Baptist Church, 61 W. Bethel St., will host Joy Night, an evening filled with singing, dancing and spiritual performances.

The event is free. Cookies and punch will be served at the conclusion.

No Tobacco Day



Port City Java will host World No Tobacco Day with the Tobacco Free Washington County Coalition Wednesday, May 26. This year's theme is "Women and Tobacco" and will include activities geared to women and girls with the message, "Smoke Free Diva."

All activities will take place in Center Court at Long Meadow Shopping Center in front of Port City Java, 1551 Potomac Ave., and will include local organizations offering tobacco free messages and giveaways as well as live music, entertainment and activities for everyone.

The event will be from 6 to 8 p.m. "Smoke Free Diva" pink T-shirts will be given to the first 50 participants as well as free flowers, snacks, popcorn and prizes.

Red Cross



The Washington County Chapter of the American Red Cross will offer a class on becoming a volunteer Red Cross instructor, beginning June 9. It will include standard first aid, adult, child and infant CPR/AED.

Alumni meeting



South Hagerstown High School's Alumni Association will meet Thursday, May 13, at 7 p.m. in the school's media center.

Subjects to be discussed include the June 17 golf tournament at Beaver Creek, recent scholarship recipients and plans for the mega reunion event in 2011.

Summer reading



This year's Summer Reading Club begins Tuesday, June 1, at Washington County Free Library, at 100 S. Potomac St.

Participants can earn up to three prizes throughout the summer for reading books, writing reviews, attending library programs and other activities.

At sign-up, participants (early readers) will receive a reading club bag including the game board, temporary tattoo and an ice cream coupon for Chick-fil-A.

The program runs until Aug. 31, and all participants who finish the game board by Friday, Aug. 13, will receive tickets to that evening's Hagerstown Suns baseball game.

A Reading Club T-shirt, featuring everyone's favorite summer reader, Sneaks the Cat will be available in juvenile and adult sizes. The shirts cost $5 for children and $6 for adult sizes.

May 10 to 16 is Children's Book Week at the Central Library, 100 S. Potomac St. in Hagerstown. Stop by the Children's Department for this special week celebrating children's books.
