GREENCASTLE, Pa. -- Gary Martin was approved at the Greencastle-Antrim School District board meeting on Thursday as the new boys basketball coach.

Martin succeeds Garon Gembe, who coached Greencastle for 10 years and retired from his position.

Martin, who lives in Harrisburg, Pa., comes to Greencastle after serving as an assistant coach at Penn State Harrisburg for one year, the latest stop in 18 years of coaching.

"I'm attracted to Greencastle because of the heart in the kids in all the sports," said Martin. "I see this as an opportunity of coming into a program not hoping to win, but coming in to win."

He was an assistant coach at Susquehanna Township for two years and was the head coach at Cedar Cliff in 2005 and 2006. He also has stops at Dickinson College, Steel-High, East Pennsboro and Carlisle.

He is a substitute teacher and employed full time at Pinnacle Health in Harrisburg. He indicated he is interested in pursuing a teaching career in the G-A district. He has a bachelor's degree in elementary education from Penn State University.

"Greencastle basketball teams have always been well-coached and fought hard," said Martin. "I have good memories of them battling against Susquehanna Township."

Martin will begin working in the district next week and will meet with members of the basketball program.
