Martin does everything in Gaels' win over Lions

HAGERSTOWN -- Nic Martin had a performance to remember on his Senior Night.

Martin pitched a three-hitter with 13 strikeouts and went 4-for-4 from the leadoff spot to lead St. Maria Goretti to an 8-2 win over Broadfording Christian on Thursday night at Municipal Stadium.

"I haven't pitched that well at all this season," Martin said. "It kind of surprised me. I just wanted to go out and throw strikes and trust the defense. Tonight, we did a good job in the field and that was a big help."

"Nic pitched a great ballgame," Gaels coach Duane Myers said. "He hit his locations and that is why he was tough to hit tonight."

Martin was thankful for the run support.

"It made me a little bit more confident as a pitcher when our hitting was good. It is always nice to have a lead to work with," Martin said. "In the past few games, we weren't hitting that well. Tonight, everybody was swinging the bats well. Jay Donoghue was hurt for the last few games. With him coming back tonight, that was a spark for us."

Broadfording (7-7) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Leadoff batter Gabe Hirsch reached on a dropped third strike. Two outs later, Donnie Fritz walked and Joe Garrish singled to right to score Hirsch.

Goretti (9-16) responded with two runs in the bottom half. Martin led off with a double to left. One out later, Vince Turano doubled to right. A wild pitch let Martin score as Turano advanced to third. After Donoghue walked, Aaron Wilkinson hit a sacrifice fly to center to drive in Turano.

The Gaels added two runs in the second to stretch their lead to 4-1. Martin ripped an RBI double to left and scored on the play on a throwing error.

Turano scored on a wild pitch in the third to make it 5-1, and Goretti made it 8-1 with three runs in the fourth. Dan Rost belted a two-run triple to right and scored on a single to left by Donoghue.

The Lions got their last run in the fifth when Andrew Wyand scored on a single to right by Ryan Dominguez.
