Alma Kathaleen Garland, age 78, of Hagerstown and a resident of NMS Health Care of Hagerstown, died Wednesday, May 5, 2010, at the facility.

Born Sept. 3, 1931, in Delaware, she was the daughter of the late Jabez and Gladys Schetrompf Knable and the widow of Herman F. Garland, who died July 19, 1989, and whom she married June 7, 1952.

She retired from the Washington County Board of Education on June 11, 1997, as an elementary school teacher.

Alma received her bachelor of arts degree in 1971 and her master of science degree in 1977 from Towson University.

She taught at Salem Avenue and Bester elementary schools in Hagerstown, Md.

She was a member of the Calvary Assembly of God, Waynesboro, Pa.

She is survived by one daughter, Pamela Joy Reno of Hagerstown, Md.; one son, Michael K. Garland Sr. of Chambersburg, Pa.; two sisters, Mary Catherine Strait of Chambersburg, Pa., and Mildred O. Stotler of Hancock, Md.; three brothers, Charles K. Knable of Avon Park, Fla., and Carl L. Knable and Ray A. Knable, both of Needmore, Pa.; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.


She was preceded in death by a brother, Harold E. Knable, in 2004.

A service will be Monday, May 10, 2010, at 10 a.m. at Grove Funeral Home, Hancock, Md. Pastor Doug Poffenberger will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant Grove Christian Cemetery, Warfordsburg, Pa.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
