Salvation Army thanks school

At a recent appreciation dinner and recognition, The Salvation Army saluted the Life Skills Class at Smithsburg High School for its volunteer work during the holidays for the Christmas Giveaway to the Needy program.

The class, represented at the dinner by Debra Neal and students Kellar Smith and Brittany Carrick, contributed 250 stuffed stockings and more than 100 toys to The Salvation Army's annual campaign.

The class was presented a certificate of appreciation signed by Maj. Robert Lyle.

SHHS Alumni Association to meet Thursday, May 13

South Hagerstown High School's Alumni Association will meet Thursday, May 13, at 7 p.m. in the school's media center. All SHHS alumni are welcome.

Subjects to be discussed include the June 17 golf tournament at Beaver Creek, recent scholarship recipients and plans for the mega reunion event in 2011. For more information, go to


Pork and sauerkraut dinner set for Saturday

Washington Square Methodist Church will host a pork and sauerkraut dinner Saturday from 3 to 6 p.m.

The menu includes pork, sauerkraut, mashed potatoes, green beans, applesauce, beverage and choice of cake. It will be eat in or carry out. Call-in orders also will be accepted. The event is sponsored by the church choir.

Tickets cost $8 for adults, $3.50 for those ages 6 to 10 and $2 for those ages 3 to 5. Tickets are available through choir members and at the door.

Lifeguard training planned at YMCA

The Hagerstown YMCA, at 1100 Eastern Boulevard, will conduct a review of CPR/AED for lifeguards Saturday, May 15, from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. This is a requirement for lifeguards.
