He loved breeding and showing dogs, particularly Labrador retrievers and, earlier in his life, German shorthair pointers. He also loved fishing, hunting, good food and reading mystery novels. He is remembered fondly for his quick wit and sharp mind. Proud of his nickname, "Grumpy," he lightened the days of many a coworker, nurse, physician and medical student who crossed his path, as well as his family and friends, with his humor.

He is survived by his son, Jeffrey Martin Gill of Portales, N.M.; his daughter Katherine Gill, of Houston, Texas; his stepdaughter, Marian Schalk of Chattanooga, Tenn.; and his stepson, Paul Robinson (wife Susan) of Tallahassee, Fla. He also is survived by six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, two nieces and two nephews. He was preceded in death by his father; his mother; his brother, Gaylord Gill; and his wife, Barbara Bauman Gill.

A memorial service is planned for the summer in Berkeley Springs, W.Va.
