North Hagerstown softball team forfeits 10 victories

North Hagerstown's softball team has forfeited 10 victories this season because of use of an academically ineligible player, athletic director Marcia Nissel confirmed Wednesday morning.

"What you heard is true, and we'll just leave it at that," Nissel said.

The Hubs had been 10-6 overall and 9-3 in the MVAL Antietam -- tied with Clear Spring for second place -- before it was discovered they had been playing with an ineligible player.

"I had absolutely no clue about it. If I had, there's no way she would have been on the team and playing," North coach Amanda Fleming said Wednesday. "I guess it got missed by somebody. I'm not exactly sure how it happened."

The Hubs have two regular-season games left on their schedule. They were to play at Catoctin on Wednesday night, then finish the season at home against South Hagerstown on Monday. North will likely begin play in the Maryland Class 2A West playoffs in the first round on May 13, with the draw being held May 11.

"I'm sure we can pick up and move on from here," Fleming said. "The girls seem to be in OK spirits."

North started the season 2-5 before rolling to eight straight victories, a streak that was snapped by Smithsburg on Friday.

That's all been wiped out by the forfeits, which shook up the MVAL Antietam standings. They now look like this (through Tuesday, with overall record first, then conference record): Catoctin 15-1, 12-0; Clear Spring 14-2, 10-2; Smithsburg 11-4, 9-3; Williamsport 10-5, 8-4; Boonsboro 8-8, 5-8; Brunswick 5-12, 4-9; South Hagerstown 1-14, 1-11; North Hagerstown 0-16, 0-12.
