Hawks sweep Anne Arundel to earn Region XX's top seed

ARNOLD, Md. -- Hagerstown Community College clinched the top seed in the Region XX Tournament with a doubleheader sweep of Anne Arundel on Monday, winning the opener 7-6 and the nightcap, 10-7.

In the opener, Adam Brunk had three hits and Seth Poffenberger, Justin Harris, Justin Martinez and Neil Callahan each added two hits for the Hawks (33-17).

In the nightcap, John Barrett homered to increase his HCC single-season record to 14, added a double and drove in two runs. Seth Poffenberger hit three doubles and a two-run homer, and Brunk added two hits.

The Hawks will host the Region XX Tournament on May 14-16.

Local grads shine for Mount

EMMITSBURG, Md. -- Mount St. Mary's senior Kent Worthington, a North Hagerstown graduate, pitched a six-hit shutout in the opener of the Mount's 5-0, 5-4 doubleheader sweep of Long Island on Saturday.

Worthington struck out six in the opener, while Boonsboro graduate Kyle Kane ripped an RBI single.

In the nightcap, Waynesboro graduate Andrew Caron capped a four-run rally in the seventh with an RBI single and finished with two hits.

Waynesboro graduate Zach Helman had four hits in the doubleheader.

EMMITSBURG, Md. -- Mount St. Mary's freshman Scott Rice, a Boonsboro graduate, placed eighth in the men's pole vault by clearing 14 feet, 1 1/4 inches at the Northeast Conference Championships on Sunday.

BRUNSWICK, Md. -- Tyler Itnyre had two hits, including a home run, for Brunswick in an MVAL Antietam win over Williamsport.

Spencer Cooper had a home run, Eric Omdahl had three hits and Zach Dinges added two hits for the Railroaders (9-10).

Chris Kiley had two hits, including a double, for Williamsport (7-11, 5-8).
