Accident closes northbound I-81 for several hours

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. -- Three patients were flown to York (Pa.) Hospital from a Sunday morning accident on Interstate 81 that left northbound lanes closed for several hours, according to a Franklin County 911 dispatcher and Pennsylvania State Police.

The head-on accident was reported at 7:10 a.m. south of Shippensburg, a 911 dispatcher said. The northbound lanes reopened around noon.

The three people flown out were Trenda Marie Smith, 20, Steven M. Myers, 42, and a 17-year-old boy. No addresses were provided by Pennsylvania State Police.

Police said Smith was traveling south in the northbound lane when she struck a car driven by Myers head-on. The juvenile was a passenger in the Myers vehicle, police said.

The accident occurred a couple of miles south of Shippensburg's exit 24, according to 911.

No other information was available Sunday night.
