Joseph "Joe" Eugene Shilling of Hagerstown, passed away on Wednesday, April 28, 2010, at Autumn Assisted Living in Hagerstown.

Born June 11, 1931, in Smithsburg, he was the son of the late Maynard Leon Shilling and Orpha Louise Bowman Shilling.

He was a veteran of the United States Army, served in Korea and was an active member of the Funkstown American Legion, Post No. 211.

He retired from Hagerstown and Thurmont Shoe Co., where he was employed for 35 years. He was also an avid fisherman.


He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Beulah (Hart) Shilling; one daughter, Donna Shilling Wiles and her husband, Rodney; one grandson, Joshua Wiles; and his special K-9 friend, Cinny, of eight years.

He also is survived by two brothers, Clyde Shilling and wife, Winnie, and William Shilling and wife, Linda; and one sister, Emma Sprankle and husband, Harry, all of Hagerstown.

He was preceded in death by four sisters, Ethel Otzelberger, Janice Monninger, Isabelle Shilling and Betty Eaton; and two brothers, Merle Shilling and Robert Shilling.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 1, 2010, at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown, with the Rev. Mark C. Mooney officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Lawn Memorial Park in Hagerstown.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour before the service at the funeral home.
