WILLIAMSPORT -- A two-vehicle accident Friday morning on northbound Interstate 81 near Exit 2 in Maryland caused the northbound lanes to be closed until 3:30 p.m.

The accident took place just after 9 a.m., Maryland State Police said. A tractor-trailer carrying a load of carpet overturned and struck a passenger car as it fell, police said.

The tractor-trailer driver was taken to the emergency department at Washington County Hospital for treatment of minor injuries, police said.

Two occupants of the passenger car were not injured, police said.

Traffic on northbound I-81 was backed up into West Virginia and was moving slowly, police said. Traffic through Williamsport also was backed up due to vehicles from northbound I-81 exiting onto U.S. 11 in West Virginia, police said.

Police advised motorists to avoid the town of Williamsport and northbound I-81 just north of the West Virginia state line as cleanup continued.
