Food drives scheduled May 1, May 8

The United States Postal Service Food Resources Food Drive will be held during the Hagerstown Suns game on Saturday, May 1, at Municipal Stadium, 274 Memorial Blvd. East, Hagerstown. Fans who bring food to the game will receive one raffle ticket for each can of food they bring. The stadium's phone number is 301-791-6266.

The national food drive will be Saturday, May 8. Food will be collected at mail boxes. Monetary donations will also be accepted. Checks should be made payable to Food Resources. Girl Scout Troop 40480 will help out.

DAV mobile service office in Hagerstown

A Disabled American Veterans mobile service office on wheels will be in Hagerstown from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, May 4, at the Hagerstown VA Clinic, Hub Plaza Building, 1101 Opal Court. The service officer will be available to prepare claims for VA benefits and provide information to veterans, and/or their family members.


Bring your claim number, social security number and any other pertinent documentation.

Volunteers to plant trees on farm near Antietam Creek

The Chesapeake Bay Foundation is looking for volunteers to plant more than 700 trees and shrubs on a farm along Antietam Creek from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, May 8.

The vegetation will cool water temperature in the trout stream, reduce soil erosion and provide wildlife habitat.

Dress for the weather. Refreshments and tools will be provided, but bring work gloves and shovels if you have them. The project is suitable for adults, families and community groups.

Fair trade celebration scheduled May 8

Ten Thousand Villages, a fair trade retailer in Hagerstown, will celebrate World Fair Trade Day on Saturday, May 8. The celebration will include a live drumming demonstration from 10 a.m. to noon. Each customer will receive a 25-percent savings on one regularly-priced item, and receive a free gift with any purchase, while supplies last. There will also be an opportunity to learn more about and sign up to sponsor a child through World Vision.
