Fly with the Thunderbirds contest deadline extended

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. -- An essay contest to give one lucky person the opportunity to fly with the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds has been extended until June 15, the West Virginia Air National Guard 167th Airlift Wing recently announced.

The opportunity to fly with The Thunderbirds coincides with the 2010 Labor Day weekend open house and air show, which is being hosted by the Guard unit based at Eastern West Virginia Regional Airport.

The Thunderbirds and U.S. Army Golden Knights parachute team are headlining the Thunder Over the Blue Ridge Air Show on Sept. 4-5 at the airfield south of Martinsburg.

The essay contest is being held to select the top five "Hometown Heroes" who might be eligible for the flight. Contestants vying for the honor of flying with the Thunderbirds may either nominate themselves or another worthy individual.

Submissions must include a phone number to contact in case of selection. The essay must be no more than 350 words long and explain why someone has made a difference in the community for the better.

All essays must be submitted to the 167th Airlift Wing's Public Affairs Office via email at 167AW.PA@ang.af.mil">167AW.PA@ang.af.mil or fax them to 304-616-5111. A panel will read the essays and determine the overall winner. Four people will be selected as runners up who also might participate in flights if space is available.
