James Ellsworth Wood, 83, of 17112 Lappans Road, Hagerstown, Md., died on Wednesday, April 28, 2010, at Ravenwood Nursing Home, where he was a resident.

Born April 4, 1927, in Hedgesville, W.Va., he was the son of the late Howard and Velvie Pitzer Wood.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army.

He was employed by Potomac Edison Co. in the meter test department.

He was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church. He served as an usher for many years.

He was a member of the B.P.O. Elks Lodge No. 378, Morris Frock American Legion Post 42, Potomac Edison Forerunners, Maryland Farm Bureau, A.A.R.P. and R.C.I.

He had many hobbies. He was a handyman who loved to fix things, loved carpentry, gardening, playing cards with friends, traveling, going on many cruises and tours with friends, ballroom dancing, and was a longtime square dancer. He used several time-share exchanges for family vacations.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Judith Wood; one son, Ronald James Wood, and his wife, Karen Dansberger Wood, of Lexington Park, Md.; one sister, Goldie Shugars of Oakland, Md.; and one grandson, Jeremy James Wood, and wife, Catie Guy Wood, of Fayetteville, Pa.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Gladys Richard, and a brother, Robert Wood.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Eric Norgard will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park.

Family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour before the service.
