Mail Call

April 27, 2010

"A recent caller from Shepherdstown claimed that global warming was being caused by space rockets making holes in the sky. That is so ridiculous. ... It had to be a prank call from a college student."

- Hagerstown

"This is my second time I've called about this. I watched three high school baseball games recently. ... All three games I watched, the same boy started the game, and after the score got lopsided, the coach changed one or two players. The three games I watched, there were players that never played one inning. ... If the boys were good enough to make the team, give them a chance to play. That is why kids do not want to go out for sports, because the coaches have their favorite players."

- Funkstown

"Thirty years ago, I gave my 2-year-old cocker spaniel a ham bone to keep her occupied while I was at work. I came home from work and my precious dog was dead, due to bone fragments which caused internal damage in her stomach. I have never gotten over that I caused her death. To this day I cry because she lost her life because of my stupidity. Do not give your dogs any kind of bones. Throw them out and away from your dog. Learn from my loss."

"My grandson recently joined the Air Force and I had the privilege - and I mean privilege - to go to his swearing-in and departure ceremonies. It was with great pride I watched him and the others, both male and female, take the oath to join a real gang, one with either the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, etc. Join the organization that parents, grandparents, and other family members could be proud of. Members - not members of a gang with just cowardly thugs."

- Hagerstown

"I just don't understand why nothing is being done about people standing at the entrances of public establishments and smoking those nasty-smelling cigarettes. There are signs posted that says 'no smoking in this area' or 'no smoking within 50 feet of the building.' Why do we have to keep putting up with this horrible smell when we go into and come out of public buildings? The police have plenty to do as it is, but someone needs to take action and make these public areas a smoke-free place."

- North Hagerstown

"Why so much fuss over feeling sorry for people who don't have medical insurance? I remember many years when I got all the care I needed from a clinic, I sometimes had to wait in the waiting room for an hour or two, but that happens just as often with a private facility. People are not denied basic health care. If people choose to abuse their bodies to the extremes, then other people shouldn't have to be responsible for fixing them. I've worked years at lousy jobs just so I could have medical insurance. I am responsible for me."

- Hancock

"I'm calling in response to the person talking about volcanoes, and how we don't need to do anything to stop global warming because volcanoes keep producing gases. Well ... we are emitting even more CO2 than the volcanoes are, therefore upsetting the equilibrium of the earth's atmosphere and causing global warming."

- Hagerstown

"I was hoping somebody could call in and give the directions where the mail will go after it leaves Hagerstown and back. I saw it once, but I can't remember what the details are on it. Could someone please call that in? The schedule of delivery, U.S. mail, after it leaves Hagerstown. When does it come back?"

- Hagerstown

"The post office transferred some employees to other states and the post office bought their homes - some in the millions. They can't resell them, so that helped put them in debt. Now we taxpayers might be asked to bail them out. Let them reduce their pay and benefits or go bankrupt. I have lost money in bad investments. That was my fault, not other taxpayers'."

- Williamsport

"Is there a reason why I haven't seen one piece of news about three Navy SEALS being put on trial for doing their job in the Middle East? How sad is it that our own military members are actually placed in a position to defend their actions while defending our nation? ... Given the current administration in office, this is not surprising at all. America is in big trouble."

- Keedysville

"It gets old when you keep seeing the only thing that it seems like most of our readers are caring about is their own pockets, how bad the economy was before when the Bush administration - is how much better it is now. You know there's a lot of things that were done that weren't the best in the Bush administration, but ... when we as a U.S. start looking at morality and what God, our heavenly father, has said for us and put that first instead of our own needs, we'll do much better."

- Hagerstown

"What is the difference between alcohol and drugs? Public comment appreciated."

- Clear Spring

"This is to the taxpayer in Falling Waters, W.Va., that deserves a clean road, because of a couch, tires and trash all over Nestle Quarry Road. It's my philosophy that a helping hand is usually at the end of your wrist - more than ever, with this economy."
