What Do You Think?

April 27, 2010

The question posted Friday on The Herald-Mail's website was: NATO has agreed to begin handing over control of Afghanistan to the Afghan government this year. Do you think that is a good idea?

Poll results:

Yes: 386 votes (68 percent)

No: 178 votes (32 percent)

"Yes, bring our troops home. I wish we had never sent troops into Iraq and Afghanistan in the first place. Too many of our troops have been killed, wounded or disabled for life."

---

"I voted yes only because that country is a lost cause and it isn't worth one more American's life. Those people hate us and they won't stand up for themselves. They are weak and have no desire to be free. If they did, they would fight like our forefathers fought for our freedom from oppression."

"Those fanatics have been killing each other for thousands of years and will continue to do so whether we are there or not, so bring home our troops and our money. We have enough hungry people in this country to take care of."

---

"Yes. We have made our point and put those responsible for Sept. 11 on the defensive. It is time to withdraw our troops and let the Afghans take over. There is nothing more we can do and staying there too long will only result in more loss of life."

---

"This poll question dovetails nicely with the last poll on trust in government. Since I have no way to know the situation on the ground in Afghanistan, I would be inclined to trust those who are there and involved. My hope would be that the decision is based on a sound evaluation of that situation and not being decided for reasons of political expediency at home."
