Hawks win opener in split with Monroe

Justin Harris and Jordan Thurber drove in runs with RBI singles in a three-run sixth inning to lead Hagerstown Community College to a 6-4 win in the opening game of a doublheader split with visiting Monroe (N.Y.) Community College on Sunday.

Monroe won the nightcap 7-6 with a run in the seventh on a two-out bloop single.

HCC pitcher Pat Landers threw a complete-game victory with eight strikeouts in the opener.

The Hawks (28-15) came from behind in the sixth as Jeremy Delgado led off with a double and scored on Harris' single to tie the game. Thurber's single gave HCC the lead, and the Hawks picked up an insurance run on a double steal.

Thurber had two hits and an RBI for the Hawks, while Delgado added two hits.

In the nightcap, John Barrett went 4-for-4 with four RBIs for HCC.

Barrett hit a solo home run in the fifth and a three-run double in the sixth to tie the game, before Monroe won it in the seventh.


Tyler Walsh added two hits for HCC.

Mia Doyle wins NEAC title

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. --Wilson College junior Mia Doyle, a graduate of Smithsburg High School and Hagerstown Community College, defeated two-time defending champion Megan McGowan of Keuka College 6-4, 6-2 in the North Eastern Athletic Conference championship match at No. 1 singles.

Doyle, whose victory also earned her NEAC Player of the Year honors, will be vying for an at-large bid to the NCAA Division III championships.

Her twin, Tessa Doyle, was the runner-up at No. 2 singles. Together, they finished fourth at No. 1 doubles.


Beaver Creek seniors advance

Beaver Creek Country Club picked up a quarterfinal victory in the Washington Metropolitan Golf Association Senior Team Championship on Sunday.

Beaver Creek marched to a convincing 14-4 victory over Manor Country Club and will meet Evergreen (Va.) Country Club in the semifinals on Saturday.

In Sunday's match play at Beaver Creek, the team of Marty Miller and Tim Steiner swept their opponents for three points and the Randy Cree-Ken Kasai and Jim Sklencar-Dude Martz teams each picked up 1 1/2 points.

At Manor, Bill Calhoun-Peter Wesp won a full three points and Finley Benjamin-Kerry Rosfeld and Ira Pearlman-John Mann each recorded 2 1/2 points.
