Wilkinson's homer not enough for Gaels

  • Faith Volkening, 15, of Boonsboro, competing for Excellence Gymnastics of Frederick, took third place on the balance beam with a score of 8.8 at the USA Gymnastics Women's Junior Olympic State Level 10 Championships. Volkening also scored an 8.925 on vault and an 8.5 on floor.

Aaron Wilkinson hit a three-run homer and finished with four RBIs, but it was not enough for St. Maria Goretti in a 15-9 loss to Bishop Walsh on Saturday.

Nic Martin, Vince Turano and Taylor Litzinger each had two hits and Ian Moss drove in two runs for the Gaels (7-11).

INWOOD, W.Va. -- The Applemen pulled out a victory with a run in the seventh inning in the opener of a doubleheader, before getting three-hit in the second game to split the twinbill.

In the opener, Andy Mochabee had two hits and three RBIs, and Evan Woolum added three hits and scored four runs for Musselman (12-6).

INWOOD, W.Va. -- Tanner Everton had two hits and three RBIs and pitched a three-hitter to lead Jefferson past Morgantown in the first game of a doubleheader split.

Zach Lambert had two hits, two runs and an RBI for the Cougars (15-7).

In the nightcap, Lambert and Cody Johnson had two RBIs each for Jefferson.

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. -- Chambersburg lost an early lead because of four errors and seven walks, allowing State College to score in each of the last four innings.

The Trojans (6-4) led 2-0 after four innings. But after starter Mitchell Warner left the game, Chambersburg committed three errors to help State College record all of its runs.

Andrew Byers had two hits and two RBIs for the Trojans, while Tyler McDonald added two hits. Garrett Sanders added an RBI triple.

Hun School 3-1, Mercersburg Academy 1-4

PRINCETON, N.J. -- Josh Muller laid down two key bunt singles to set up runs and lead Mercersburg Academy to a win in the nightcap of a doubleheader with Hun School.

Muller reached base on bunts in the third and fifth innings and scored on hits by Sam Rodgers and Cesar Wong to create the winning runs for the Blue Storm (8-4-1). Chris Thorson had two hits for Mercersburg.

In the opener, Hun School's Mike Ford, a major league pitching prospect, fired a two-hitter with 13 strikeouts to defeat the Blue Storm.

The loss in the opener, which is the only game that will count in the Mid-Atlantic Prep League standings, locked Mercersburg into the second seed for the upcoming league tournament on May 8. Hun School will be the top seed.

Mercersburg got its only run in the fourth when Wong tripled and scored on Rodgers' grounder. Thorson started and struck out six.

Caroline Rosenthal pitched a five-inning one-hitter with eight strikeouts and added two hits as St. Maria Goretti earned its second win of the season.

Colleen McCauley had two hits, including a home run, and drove in four for the Gaels (2-9). Emma Bartholomew had a triple, two doubles and two RBIs, and Cassie Rzomp added two hits, including a double.
