Hubs come crashing down vs. Railroaders

April 24, 2010|By JACK HILL III/Staff Correspondent

HAGERSTOWN -- Two days after knocking off previously unbeaten Clear Spring, North Hagerstown suffered a letdown against Brunswick.

Tyler Itnyre pitched a shutout and Michael Hooper had four hits and four RBIs as the Railroaders crushed the Hubs 11-0 in six innings in an MVAL Antietam baseball game.

"We just slept all through the game," North coach Steve Myers said. "Hopefully, we learned a little bit about ourselves. Just because you beat a good team like Clear Spring doesn't mean the rest of the victories are going to come easy. Brunswick came out and pounded it. They hit the ball real well today. We just didn't match up with them in the hitting today."

Itnyre allowed only three hits and a pair of walks while striking out six. He and Dylan Brown also had three hits each for Brunswick (8-7, 5-4).

"Today is the first day of this season that we have put all three facets of the game together: Pitching, defense and hitting," Brunswick coach Roger Dawson said. "If we can put all three together on a consistent basis, then I think that is the type of team that we can be."

The closest that North (8-4, 5-3) came to scoring was in the bottom of the third inning. Jake Bachtell led off with a single to right to raise his team-leading batting average to .500. Charles Cvijanovich then singled to move Bachtell to second, and both runners advanced one base on a wild pitch. But the next three Hubs batters were retired to kill the threat.

Andrew Yacyk singled in the fourth for the Hubs' only other hit.

Brunswick got a run in the top of the first on a sacrifice fly by Brett Stramin.

The Railroaders rallied for five runs in the second for a 6-0 lead. Hooper belted a three-run double, while Zach Dinges and Stramin added an RBI double each.

Brunswick got two more runs in the third on an RBI double by Hooper and an RBI single by Dinges, and added a run in the fifth on an RBI single by Brown. Brunswick scored its final two runs in the sixth on a two-run double by Itnyre.
