April 22, 2010

A Smithsburg man who was charged after he was found Jan. 20 passed out in a vehicle in which police found two revolvers and ammunition on Warner Hollow Road has requested a jury trial in Washington County Circuit Court, according to a Washington County District Court spokeswoman.

The case against Steven Glenn Palmer, 58, will be transferred to Washington County Circuit Court for trial, the spokeswoman said.

Palmer is charged with transporting two handguns, driving under the influence of alcohol, trespassing, second-degree assault and resisting arrest, according to court records.

Palmer's 1997 Dodge Caravan was seen on the side of Warner Hollow Road in a watershed area that belongs to the City of Hagerstown and is posted with no trespassing signs, court records show.

When Smithsburg Police Officer J. Witmer asked Palmer what he was doing in the area, Palmer pushed Witmer away from his vehicle and said, "get away from my vehicle," court records show.

Palmer had to be physically removed from the vehicle after he grabbed the steering wheel with both hands and pushed against the floor with his feet, police said.
