BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. -- The Morgan County Board of Education adopted a 5 percent increase in the levy rate at its meeting Tuesday night after no public comments were made.
The school board unanimously approved the increase. Board member Larry Omps was absent.
The excess levy rate was increased from 83.5 percent to 88.5 percent beginning July 1 for fiscal year 2010-11, school board president Laura Smith said.
The increase was necessary because the capital improvement fund is depleted and schools need to be renovated, Morgan County Schools treasurer Nancy White said.
White said before the meeting that someone with a $200,000 home who paid $925.50 in school taxes last year will pay $953.04 this year.
