April 20, 2010

HANCOCK -- A tractor-trailer rolled over Tuesday afternoon on westbound Interstate 68 near Woodmont Road, spilling a load of galvanized metal banding material, according to a Maryland State Police spokesman.

The driver of the truck was trapped for more than two hours while his hand was pinned between the cab and the top of a guardrail post, Trooper Shane Bussard said.

The driver was freed at 7:40 p.m. and taken to R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore for injuries that were not life-threatening, Bussard said.

Bussard said he could not release the name the driver Tuesday night because he was still investigating the accident.

The crash occurred at 5:17 p.m. when the truck skidded, collided with a guardrail and overturned in a ditch, Bussard said.

It is not clear what caused the truck to skid, Bussard said.

Both westbound lanes were closed after the crash and traffic was detoured through Hancock, Bussard said.

One lane was reopened at 10:03 p.m. and crews were working to clean up the crash scene at 10:30 p.m., Bussard said.
