Miss Washington County 2010 Mary King appeared at the March meeting of the Kiwanis Club of Hagerstown, where she spoke about her platform, "AKA - Active Kids Achieve."

She said her program started close to her heart from her love for dance. As a dance teacher for the last six years, she realized there were children in the community who could not afford classes. She started saving money so she could give at least one child the chance to take dance and "Active Kids Achieve" was born.

Soon after, she realized that on her own, she could not afford to provide for every child in need and that although dance was close to her heart, children's talents and abilities are as diverse as their personalities.

By encouraging youth to get involved in athletics, the arts and volunteerism, not only do they have the opportunity to find out what makes them special, but they have a greater chance to excel in the classroom and reach their strongest potential, she told the group.

She has taken her message into local schools and Girls Inc.
