Acupuncture office hosts open house

SUFI Acupuncture invites the public to its new treating space at 28 S. Potomac St. in downtown Hagerstown on Tuesday, April 20.

The grand opening event begins with Hagerstown Mayor Robert E. Bruchey II cutting a ribbon at 11 a.m. Singer-songwriter Camela Widad Kraemer will perform from noon to 12:30 p.m., followed by a light lunch.

Thomas Munib Merrill and Shamsa Kara Bowman will provide free acupuncture treatments from 1 to 6 p.m. Gift drawings will occur all day.

Seminars set to guide through nursing homes

FREDERICK, Md. - The Frederick County Department of Aging's Caregiver Support and Ombudsman seminar called "Navigating the Nursing Home Journey." This seminar is designed for individuals who have recently placed a family member or loved one in a nursing home.

The seminar will be offered during May as a series of four modules, with each module lasting an hour and a half. It will be educational in nature and include speakers on various topics of interest and include time for questions and for families to seek support from one another. The modules will be offered as follows:

May 1 - "Overview of Nursing Homes and Communicating with Staff"

May 8 - "Common Care Concerns"

May 15 - "Hospice and Palliative Care in the Nursing Home"

May 22 - "Emotional reactions to Nursing Home Placement"

All modules will be held at the Frederick County Department of Aging from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Call Mary or Mindy at 301-600-6001 or Mia at 301-600-2877 for information or to register for the program. Free; however, registration is required by Saturday, May 1.

Men's Health seminar scheduled for May

Hagerstown Community College will offer a seminar, "Men's Health," from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Friday, May 14, at the Elliott Center on the HCC Campus.

This four-hour seminar will address high-risk areas for men with sleep apnea and prostrate health. Current nursing standards of practice related to diagnosis of both will be presented. Presenters include Dr. Abdul Waheed, pulmonary specialist with Pulmonary Consultants of Hagerstown, and Dr. Hugh Talton, urologist with The Urological Center.

Nurses and nurse practitioners will be eligible for 4.25 contact hours of continuing education credits. The fee is $39 for health care professionals and $25 for the general public. To register or learn more, call 301-790-2800 ext. 236.
