Tractor-trailer fire closes Pa. Turnpike

April 19, 2010

WILLOW HILL, Pa. -- A tractor-trailer fire on the Pennsylvania Turnpike burned for several hours Monday, as firefighters contended with rolls of paper that rekindled.

The truck's driver was flown by helicopter to Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center in Baltimore for treatment of burns after the 6:16 p.m. incident, Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission spokesman Todd Leiss said.

One westbound lane of the turnpike (Interstate 76) remained closed around milepost 195 at 10:30 p.m. Monday. Leiss said it would probably remain closed for several more hours, as the Fannett-Metal Fire Department led efforts to extinguish the flames from paper the truck was hauling.

Pennsylvania State Police in Newville, Pa., were investigating.

No other vehicles were involved, Leiss said.
