Mail Call

April 17, 2010

"Whether we are having global warming or not, the weather is always being studied, and climate engineering seems to be a way to go. Now, this is for people that actually read into the science facts. Research is being done to use climate engineering to slow down the warmth of the earth, but here's what's holding back climate engineering. They're fishing for a balanced, open, publicly funded research program."

- Hagerstown

"This is in response to the person in Lakeside that mailed a letter that took 13 days. Well, now when you mail something out of Hagerstown it goes to Frederick. Frederick then transfers it down to Gaithersburg. It's processed there, brought back to Frederick, and then transferred back to Hagerstown, which may or may not take even longer. So good luck. And if your mail is a local delivery and if your letter is local, you're better off just to take it right to the place and hand it to them."

"Thank you for printing David Limbaugh's articles - actually, no thanks. That's a whole half of a page that I don't have to read, of his rants and raves about President Obama and what he should be doing. David Limbaugh should run for president if he thinks he should do better. I think you should drop his articles from the newspaper."

- Hagerstown

"Enjoying the articles about long marriages over 50 to 70 years. They have been inspirational and full of teaching moments. Thanks, Herald-Mail, for printing columns of hope. We need this in such a troubled world."

- Washington County

"In response to the Cavetown caller, about the Red Sox and the Yankees, nobody was comparing the Orioles to the Yankees or the Red Sox. My statement was that we are rebuilding and we're doing it the right way, ever since Andy MacPhail has become our GM, and in a couple years we will be ready to contend with the Yankees and the Red Sox, through our rebuilding process."

- Hagerstown

"I'd like to call to say I thank whoever found a little black Chihuahua in Williamsport around April 1st, 2nd or 3rd, somewhere around the 1st of the month. I had had surgery on my back and visiting my sister, and he got out and took off. I am so grateful and so appreciative that they turned him in to the Humane Society. Whoever did this, I would love to thank you."

- Hagerstown

"I'm calling in response to the caller from Hagerstown who says that the county employees use county vehicles for personal reasons. State Highway Administration is just as bad, if not worse, and when you call to report it, nobody does anything to it."

- Hagerstown

"I'm reading the front page of The Herald-Mail, where it talks about 'Residents balk at water, sewer rate hikes,' and it's all about how much the increase is gonna cost us all ... the model calls for the county to continue to increase water and sewer revenues by 4 percent each year through fiscal 2020. Now, if my math serves me right, that's 10 years - 10 years times 4 percent is 40 percent increase. ... That's insane."

- Williamsport

"I've been reading in Mail Call about ... light going up. I just received my bill, and estimated was half of what it was last month, I used half, and my bill is $73 more. I don't know how they think people can pay these bills when everyone's jobs are being lost. I mean, we had two and three jobs and now we've got one job, and hours have been cut. It really doesn't make any sense."

- Hagerstown

"I find it supremely ironic that just as BP Solar moves out of the country, the Maryland legislature passes a bill requiring utilities to use more - and of course, more expensive - solar power. Where do you think those solar panels, etc., are going to be made? Not here. Hint: It starts with 'C' and ends with 'a'. So we utility customers will be forced, courtesy of the Maryland legislature, to pay more for our electricity in the subsidized foreign industries."

- Frederick, Md.

"It never ceases to amaze me how people can give away their senior pets. Our one senior dog has given us so much pleasure, we will see him through to the end. Why not contact a rescue group who will screen applicants, instead of a one-time visit from an ad? Your best friend deserves a good life, in what could be his final years."

- Greencastle, Pa.

"Mail Call will publish comments about dogs barking and car stereos blasting - which is valid - but will not publish anything regarding four-wheelers terrorizing neighbors every waking daylight hour. The person listening to Mail Call must be one of those riders."

- Smithsburg

"I'm calling about people wondering why the Republicans keep wanting to filibuster everything that Obama's done. Well, what has he done but take money from everybody? Stop and think, we little people are the ones keeping him going and keeping Congress going, and yet all they're doing's stealing from us."

- Chambersburg, Pa.
