Mail Call

April 16, 2010

"Walking out of a grocery store, when I opened up the door for a fine gentleman and his wife, he relayed this to me, and I think everybody needs to hear it. Just think, in 1980 we had Reagan, Johnny Cash and Bob Hope. Today, we have Obama, no cash, no hope. Think that one through a little bit."

- Hagerstown

"I love this global warming. And for you people that think nonbelievers in global warming are idiots, well, surprise, there has been global warming since the dawn of time. Off and on, the earth goes through global warming. And also, if you remember your basic elementary science, the older the sun gets - that thing that rises in the morning and sets in the evening - the older the sun gets, the hotter it gets. Who knows how old the sun actually is? But the bottom line is there's always been global warming. So what's the big deal?"

"You know, I listen to all this politic stuff because I'm retired, but I cannot believe that these Tea Parties or right-wingers or anybody would want to go back to the Bush years. The way they talk, they want to take over in 2010 and straighten this country out. What happened for the eight years that Bush was in there? Why didn't they straighten it out then? And we were in terrible shape whenever Obama took over, and I think he's slowly getting things squared away."

- Hagerstown

"Herald-Mail and Arnold Platou has a five-star rating. He's the only one that's been covering these stories locally, and I don't care if it's radio, TV, or other, printed. I hope the elected officials - county, city - really look at this. Look at the numbers, especially on A3, about how many foreclosures. And they keep saying things are better, and if they start, keep giving raises and all these other benefits and keep spending, they're crazy. Just get rid of them."

- Leitersburg

"I thought the caller that compared the Obama and Bush first year was right on. Yes, I do remember 9/11 and the Cole. I also remember Vietnam, a war that we needn't have fought. Like Iraq, the focus was away from what it should have been. After a country being in existence for 200-and-some years, can't we learn that we need to try negotiation? Bush should have gone after Afghanistan, not Iraq. That is why the first year of the Obama administration is one to be admired."

- Hagerstown

"I would just like to say that I do not understand why the county commissioners would call for a meeting at 9 a.m. in the morning on things such like sewer and water increases, so that most of the people who work cannot attend."

- Washington County

"Former Governor Ehrlich is running for governor again. He gave us septic fees, doubled the price of car tags, did not pay some bills and left our state in debt. We don't need those fees. The fair way is to raise income taxes, not fees. Fees hurt the low-income people the most."

- Williamsport

"I just watched over one half hour of complaints on the city council meeting about code enforcement. All I can say is the majority of the city council have never lived close to some of the rental properties that I have, or else they would be glad for the code enforcement that is now in place."

- Hagerstown

"This is the second time I've called and nothing has been printed, but I am calling regarding today's paper, Tuesday, April 13, 2010, regarding the caller from Boonsboro, about parents raising their kids right, so they don't play the radio loud and put their windows down. The lady needs to stay home. No matter how we raise our children, they're going to play their music. So to the Boonsboro caller: Grow up, get a life, and maybe you should have kids of your own."

- Hagerstown

"I live on Jefferson Boulevard across from Liberty Station, and I would like to congratulate the county for cleaning out the culvert in front of our house. I do wish they'd come back and get the mess that they left."

- Hagerstown

"I understand the same group of do-good liberals that killed the Joe Camel ad campaign because it led to kids smoking cigarettes, now want to terminate Ronald McDonald, claiming his ads cause children to overeat and become fat. What a joke."

- Hagerstown

"This is on water sewer rate hikes. I see they had the meeting. Of course, they're going to raise it, but this thing in here about rate model, you know that's like everything, everything else the city and the county does. They got this gimmick stuff about what they gotta do. Of course, the state makes these mandates, which the mandates needs to be gone. Causes a lot of headaches for people. The city and county needs to know how to spend money reasonable, and do with what they got."

- Hagerstown

"It was stated in Mail Call that Washington County has thousands of children in school getting free or subsidized meals due to poverty. My question is, how many of these children or their parents are carrying cell phones?"

- Williamsport
