Shafer twirls another gem for Hawks

Jay Shafer followed up a no-hitter in his last start with another outstanding start Wednesday, a complete-game three-hitter that led Hagerstown Community College to a 5-1 victory over Chesapeake at HCC.

Shafer improved to 5-1 on the season. He struck out three and has allowed just two runs in his last 18 innings pitched.

Neil Callahan's three-run homer in the Hawks' four-run second inning provided the run support for Shafer. Callahan, Jeremy Delgado and Travis Sluger each had two hits for HCC (22-10, 2-1 Region XX Division I).

Chesapeake falls to 24-8, 3-1.

Shepherd 4, Shippensburg 3

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. -- Tyler Beard walked with the bases loaded to force Brian Collins home and give Shepherd a walkoff win over Shippensburg (12-28).

Collins went 3-for-5 with two RBIs for the Rams (17-17), while Anthony Johnson and Michael Lott each had two hits.

HCC 8-9, Prince George's 0-1

Christina Mehaffie had two hits and four RBIs to lead Hagerstown in the opener of its Maryland JuCo doubleheader sweep of Prince George's.

Amanda Lizama added two hits and two RBIs for the Hawks in Game 1.

Mallory Wishard hit a three-run homer in the nightcap which put HCC (11-9, 10-4) ahead by eight in the fifth and ended the game via the mercy rule. Wishard finished Game 2 with two hits and four RBIs, while Shawnda Wills had two hits and drove in three and Katie Kesecker added three hits.

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. -- Shepherd University defeated Seton Hill on Wednesday in a West Virginia Athletic Conference doubleheader.

Nichole Pitcock had three hits in the opener to help support the pitching of Tricia Bettura, who scattered three hits.

Kris Durham rapped a three-run home run in the nightcap and Pitcock added two more hits along with picking up the victory in the circle with eight strikeouts.

Williamsport 8, Brunswick 2

WILLIAMSPORT -- Zach Lucas homered and Ryan Butts added two hits and two RBIs to aid Williamsport in its MVAL Antietam victory over Brunswick (5-6, 3-3).

Connor Arnone, Blake Bandeff and David Carr had two hits apiece for the Wildcats (5-6, 3-3).

HUSTONTOWN, Pa. -- Hunter McKinley had two hits and two RBIs and earned the pitching victory in a complete-game effort for Hancock.

Chris Harden tied the game for the Panthers (6-2) in their four-run sixth inning with an RBI single and Tanner Faith followed with a squeeze bunt to plate the go-ahead run.

Grimsley also got the win on the mound by pitching six innings and giving up just five hits and two unearned runs for the Gaels (3-9).

INWOOD, W.Va. -- Christian Binford hit a solo home run and Matt Timoney went 4-for-4 to pace Mercersburg Academy (5-2-1) on offense as the Blue Storm snapped Musselman's nine-game winning streak.

Cody Barrett had three hits for the Applemen (10-2), while Ryan LaRose doubled twice and drove in two.
