WAYNESBORO, Pa. -- Farmers markets and special Saturday events will start in downtown Waynesboro this May.

Nonprofit organization Main Street Waynesboro Inc. is planning for "Strolling Saturdays" on the first Saturday of every month starting May 1. Also in the works is a weekly farmers market every Saturday from May through September.

"I had a lot of people tell me they're very excited," said Melissa Russ, promotions coordinator for Main Street Waynesboro Inc.

The farmers market's organizing committee is trying to determine whether to hold the event on Center Square or within the Rotary Parking Lot, Russ said. That decision should be made later this week, she said.

Holding the markets at the parking lot could allow the Waynesboro Fire Department to tie in some fundraising opportunities, Russ said.

"We're trying to think of the community, too, not just Main Street," she said.

The farmers markets will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Potential vendors or volunteers can call Main Street Waynesboro Inc. at 717-762-0397 or visit

Coordinating with the farmers' markets will be Strolling Saturdays, where businesses will offer promotions to coincide with live entertainment. Russ said Main Street Waynesboro Inc. is lining up bands, book signings and food vendors.

The Humble Competitive Barbecue Team signed up for the first Strolling Saturday, which will be held during the morning and early afternoon.

"It's just an idea to get people downtown," Russ said.
