Elizabeth "Betty" Shockey, 94

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. - Elizabeth "Betty" Shockey, age 94, of Port St. Lucie, Fla., died Monday, April 5, 2010, at Treasure Coast Hospice in Fort Pierce, Fla.

She was born in Homestead, Pa., on Sept. 15, 1915, to Mariya Maximova Poozhakoff-Possnack and Anise (Alexander) Klimenko, immigrants from New Babofe, Zipkoff District, Chernigov Province, Russia.

Mariya and Anise had six children: Dorothy, Elizabeth, Nickolas and Michael, and two who died in infancy. When Anise died in 1921, Elizabeth's mother married Makar Otrosk and had three daughters, Sonia, Martha and Elsie. Elizabeth was blessed with 14 nieces and seven nephews.

Betty moved to Waynesboro, Pa., and raised her family there. Then she moved to Port St. Lucie and lived there for 21 years.

She was a member of Waynesboro Hospital Auxiliary and Evangelical Lutheran Church of Waynesboro, and was an avid golfer and bridge player. She also taught floral arranging and received many awards for her arrangements. She was an expert at horticulture and landscaping. She loved the outdoors.

She is survived by her husband of 73 years, Donovan Shockey. She is also survived by her two sons, Paul Shockey and his wife, Barbara, of Savannah, Ga., and Michael Shockey and his wife, Kathleen, of Greencastle, Pa.

She was blessed with six grandchildren: Matt Shockey of Chambersburg, Pa., Alex Shockey of Waynesboro, Pa., Ben Shockey of Syracuse, Ind., Anna Lofton of Hagerstown, Md., and Carly and Catrina Shockey of Boonsboro, Md. She was also blessed with two great-grandchildren, Isaac and Joseph Lofton.

She will be remembered by her spirit in what she wrote in her conclusion to her research of the family genealogy on July 3, 1994: "In closing, I must say that I am very proud to be a member of this family. Don and I have had a happy and interesting 56 years (now 73 years) of married life. We traveled extensively with a travel trailer for 10 years. We visited many places and met interesting people - even the parents of Jeb Stuart (the astronaut) in a campground in Alabama. Make the most of your lives! Stay well and happy! Sincerely, Elizabeth Klimenko Shockey."

A memorial service will be announced at a later date.
