Washington County Bar Association plans Law Day on April 30

April 14, 2010

On Friday, April 30, the Bar Association of Washington County Inc. will observe Law Day under the leadership of Law Day co-chairs Michelle Hansen, Lynn Williams and Arthur Schneider.

The co-chairs and Mark Boyer will be guests of Lou Scally for a radio show on WJEJ Radio, AM 1240, from 9 to 10 a.m. to talk about the law and address legal questions from callers.

In addition, association members will meet with seniors at the senior center at Girls Inc. of Washington County, 626 Washington Ave. in Hagerstown, to prepare advanced directives and health care powers of attorney. Appointments can be made by calling Kathy Fisher at 301-671-2368. Copies of the Constitution with the Bill of Rights will be available at Girls Inc. and at the radio station.

In 1958, President Dwight Eisenhower established Law Day as "a day of national dedication to the principle of government under law." Commemorated annually since that date, Law Day programs are conducted throughout the country by bar associations, courts, schools and civic groups.

The association is comprised of local attorneys and judges dedicated to the rule of law and the advancement of the legal profession. This past year, its members have served as judges for the Maryland State Bar Association's Statewide High School Mock Trial Competition and sponsored a dinner honoring the Washington County students who participated in the competition. The association also contributed to the sponsorship of the Choosing Civility program recently hosted by the Choosing Civility Task Force and the Chamber of Commerce.
