Mail Call

April 14, 2010

"To answer the caller from Brownsville about the old building in Trego: There are no gas tanks underground. By law, gas tanks must be removed when gas is no longer being sold at the business. There is no oil tank in the basement of the building, because there is no basement."

- Hagerstown

"I'm a Democrat who will be voting for Bob Ehrlich in the upcoming governor election. I actually vote across party lines whenever - I vote for the best person that I feel is needed in the position. I was a Republican, I voted for Bush, he got us into the wrong war, I changed my party affiliation, and I feel that I had more money in my pocket when Ehrlich was governor. I think Ehrlich needs to focus on the votes in the Baltimore County area, and I wish him all the best."

- Hagerstown

"I think the county commissioners should check into the county cars that are being used for personal reasons, like taking their children to McDonald's and to school - and they're not riding in a piece of junk. All the county cars are up to date. Think of the money that we could save on insurance, taxes and gas. I think this should be checked into."

"For those of you who question the value of employees belonging to a union, all you need to do is follow the newcasts of the coal miners accident in West Virginia. During this past year, the coal company violated safety regulations more than 500 times ... They paid the fine."

- Halfway

"It's about time that the Washington County Commissioners, all five of them go out on Trovinger Mill Road and look at this road. It is one piece of garbage."

- Washington County

"Sunday was a beautiful day, and in my neighborhood a lot of the kids were out on their bicycles playing. I'm talking about little kids, elementary school age. Well, here comes two young girls in a black car, loud stereo blasting away, speeding through the neighborhood. I hollered at them, they couldn't hear me, because of the stereo being up too loud. It's a good thing those kids saw them coming, because they had to hurry up and pedal their bicycles out of this girl's way ... and this girl could have cared less. She just kept on speeding up the street. Didn't bother her. I think we need more police on the streets. They do a good job, but we just need more of them."

- Hagerstown

"This is the caller from Williamsport who was asked to check my facts on SSI. SSI stands for Supplemental Security Income, the program administered by Social Security, pays monthly checks to the elderly, blind, and people with disability who don't own many things or have much income. If you get SSI, you usually get food stamps and Medicaid, too. Medicaid helps pay doctor and hospital bills. The Social Security benefit for dependents is just that - it is a Social Security dependent stipend."

- Williamsport

"To Mr. Michael, school board: Your statement, 'The kids deserve those days of education,' do you really think the students are going to do anything the last week in school? School should end on June 4. Why go back the 7th and 8th? You could save money on electric and water and gas for the school bus, plus many other things."

- Washington County

"To the Hagerstown caller who said the Baltimore Orioles are rebuilding: The Orioles have not finished above third place since 1997. They do have young arms, but your players are only as good as the organization that supports them. Their closer ... is all over the place, and Dave Trembley always appears to have a confused squint ... In order to do well in the AL East, a team must have consistency. Please don't compare the Orioles to the Yankees or my Red Sox."

- Cavetown

"Just wondering if anyone knows where I can get an affordable lie detector test done, without going to the Maury or Steve Wilkos shows."

- Smithsburg

"I'm responding to the thing that's in Mail Call about trying to get rid of stink bugs. You can put vinegar in a plastic bottle with a little bit of soapy water, and just pick up the stink bugs and put them in the bottle. That's an easy way to get rid of them. There is no pesticide that you can use to get rid of them, but vinegar, it works very well."

- Smithsburg

"I have been a Realtor for many years, and I agree with the Clear Spring resident who does not want strangers walking all over her property and peeping in the windows. The Realtor's sign in the front yard has a phone number on it for a reason, and that reason is for the prospective buyer to set up an appointment to go through the home to see if they are interested in buying. In this day and age of home invasions, the seller has a right to protect themselves from strangers. The seller has a right; after all, it is their home. Set up an appointment in advance, instead of trespassing."

- Hagerstown

"Washington County has thousands of children in school getting free or subsidized meals due to poverty, and our elected officials want to spend more than $1 million to repair an insignificant dam in Washington County. What has happened to common sense in Washington County?"
