Hagerstown fire chief, deputy chief to retire

The chief and a deputy chief of the Hagerstown Fire Department plan to retire in June.

Gary Hawbaker has been the city's fire chief since June 10, 1985, when he was hired, the city said in a news release.

He plans to retire effective June 25.

Deputy Fire Chief Ronald Horn also will retire.

Horn was hired in 1975. He became a captain in 1986, battalion chief in 1993 and deputy chief in 2003, the city's news release said.

The city has appointed William "Kyd" Dieterich to be acting fire chief after Hawbaker and Horn retire. Dieterich has been with the Hagerstown Fire Department since 1980 and has been a battalion chief since 2003.
