BlueClaws score early to tip Suns

HAGERSTOWN -- Lakewood set the early tone and made music the rest of the night.

The BlueClaws scored three runs in the third inning and maintained the lead the rest of the game to take a 7-4 victory on Monday over the Hagerstown Suns at Municipal Stadium.

Lakewood jumped on Suns starter Paul Demny (0-1) for three runs in the third, highlighted by a Anthony Hewitt two-run home run. Domingo Santana drew a leadoff walk and trotted home ahead of Hewitt on his blast to left field. Leandro Castro lofted a sacrifice fly to give the BlueClaws the third run.

The Suns tried to chip away in single-run fashion, scoring in the third, fourth and fifth innings, but still trailed 4-3.


Hagerstown got its first run in the bottom of the third when Brett Newsome drew a bases-loaded walk off Lakewood starter Jonathan Pettibone.

The Suns drew within 3-2 in the fourth on Destin Hood's homer to left, his first of the season.

The two teams traded runs in the fifth, with the Suns scoring on J.P. Ramirez's RBI single.

Mitchell Clegg took over for Demny in the fourth and allowed Lakewood to score on doubles to Castro and Sabastian Valles for a 5-3 lead.

The BlueClaws added two runs in the ninth for a 7-3 lead.

The Suns attempted to came back in the bottom of the inning, but only scored once when Francisco Soriano drove in Eury Perez with a single.

Hood increased his hit streak to five games, while Soriano increased his hit streak to five games with a bunt single in the fifth.

Demny got the loss after pitching three innings, allowing three runs and striking out four. Clegg pitched 5 1/3 innings of relief of Demny, striking out three and allowing four runs.

Pettitbone pitched 4 1/3 innings, allowing three runs and struck out five. Joshua Zeid (1-0) earned the win in relief with 2 2/3 innings work.
